me understand just a bit better how and why Obama is rising above. He must still be feeling the punches at a deep, deep level.

The shame I feel when I see McCain beating up on Obama is the shame I feel when I think of whites who disrespected Martin Luther King. Courage is when a great person stands up again and again after having been figuratively (or literally) spat upon. When I think about MLK having been so profoundly disrespected and how he stood up again and again I feel great, great shame.

I come back always in my mind to Booker T. Washington's eternal observation, "You can't hold a man down without staying down with him." It stuns and saddens me that McCain and others don't see this, but they don't.
