seem to know in advance where the trouble is going to be, just to make sure there is a clip on the evening news.

In all fairness, though, I was watching a Klan rally one in MD from the back yard of the head of the Justice Dept's counter-terrorism unit, along with a slew of FBI and local police. A news unit from a Baltimore TV station was looking for a spot to monitor the goings on and our host gladly offered them his back yard, which just happened to be the ideal spot , just adjacent to the field where the ceremonies were to take place.

The Klansmen were very cooperative, making charges at the camera and otherwise behaving in a very threatening manner. I just happened to strike up a conversation with the lead reporter and she was just besides herself, talking about all of the great footage she was going to have for the evening news report. I told her that it was just what the Klan wanted her to do and that it would be giving them free publicity and be intimidating a lot of people.

I just happened to watch the news report and all she did was mention that the rally had occurred and repeated my admonition. No footage was shown.

There are people in the media who care. let's no forget that. They may be few and far between, but they're out there watching. Sometimes, all you have to do is whisper in their ear.....

The only injuries that day were to a couple of FBI agents. Too many of them climbed into a tree house overlooking the field for a better view and it collapsed, spilling Feds everywhere. Just in case anyone is wondering if I had been there in an official capacity, I wasn't. We had been friends for almost eight years, long before he went to Justice and I at the CIA. It was a fun BBQ.
