It was after the Depression, but habits died hard for those who endured the hardships of that time. My mom told me years later that she felt a bit embarrassed by them, but she let me wear them, as my grandma was such a good seamstress (she had been an inspector at a garment factory when she could get work back then) the dresses looked great, and she didn't want to make my grandma feel bad.
Grandma also made quilts from "feed sack" materials. I still have one that means a great deal to me.
