11. From Colin McEnroe's blog:
" On the other hand, I can pretty well guarantee that no Lamont staffer or campaign official signed off on the blackface graphic. On the other hand, my years of covering Rob Simmons have given me a real dislike for shabby tricks that benefit a campaign, even as the official word from the campaign is: we knew nothing about this. But the strong words from Tom Swan are, in fact, more than I usually get from Simmons about something like this.

It's also pretty true to the quintessence of the blogs that they like these extreme and slightly unfair images. It's a commonplace on the sphere. Bloggers make Bob Englehart look like Jim Lehrer, a model of evenness and sobriety. That blackface image doesn't belong in the mainstream of a campaign, but it hews pretty close to the underground comic book spirit of many blogs. So how close should a campaign get to the bloggers who love it?"

Tom Swan's comment:

"It's offensive. It does not represent this campaign," said Tom Swan, Lamont's campaign manager. "We were offended, and we took immediate action when we heard about it."

Colin is our local drive time talk radio host and has been with the Hartford Courant for years. I trust what he has to say on these matters. He has known a lot of the participants for a long time.
