US SENATOR BARACK OBAMA THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND DEVAL PATRICK’S CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR

09/26/2005

Says Patrick’s run similar to his own historic Senate race; holding an October fundraiser for Patrick in Chicago

September 26: Senator Barack Obama, whose historic run in 2002 electrified US electoral politics, is heavily supporting Deval Patrick’s run for the Governor’s office in Massachusetts. At several events in the past weeks, Obama celebrated Patrick’s effort and compared his own surprising victory as the US’s only African American Senator to the journey Patrick is taking. This Sunday, Obama is hosting a major fundraiser for Patrick in Chicago.

“When I announced that I was running for the United States Senate, it was generally greeted with skepticism. People said, “Well he’s definitely the best candidate. We think he’d probably be the best US Senator. But let’s face it, there’s no way that a black guy from the South Side named Barack Obama can win a statewide race in a state like Illinois,” recalled Obama at a recent gathering of Harvard Law School alumni.

He continued, “It’s worth mentioning that there’s another Harvard Law School Graduate here in the State of Massachusetts who people are saying would be a pretty good Governor. But, everybody is saying, “Well I’m not sure he can win.” And I just want to make note of the fact that Deval Patrick is in the house…Deval’s in the house.”

Obama met and became friends with Patrick during Patrick’s stint as the head of the Justice Department Civil Rights Division in the Clinton Administration. Obama was then a practicing lawyer in Chicago. Both attended Harvard Law School and continued that friendship through Obama’s historic run in 2002.

In addition to his recent supportive comments Obama recently hosted Patrick at Congressional Black Caucus weekend in Washington – an event that featured appearances by Senator John Kerry, DNC Chair Howard Dean, and civil rights luminaries such as Harry Bellefonte and Dr. Joseph Lowery.
