You are absolutely right about most people not knowing any Labor history - that workers fought, starved, and died for the "rights" they take for granted in the workplace.

In my own childhood, in the '50's, I remember Strikes that were devastating - I remember my mother literally bursting into tears when two Aunts whose income did not come directly from the Mills brought over a box of groceries - she had literally not known where our next meal was coming from. But there was never ANY question that we as a family had to endure whatever it took.
