THOMAS OLIPHANT
Kerryism's comeback on Iraq
By Thomas Oliphant, Globe Columnist  |  January 11, 2005
WASHINGTON

ONE OF the major questions President Bush is facing about Iraq is how long he wants to take to get cracking on John Kerry's ideas for dealing with the mess Bush made.

In the end, all that matters is how long we are supposed to wait -- and how many Americans and Iraqis will die -- until it is recognized that all roads to a decent outcome lead through other foreign capitals, the United Nations, and some form of indigenous Iraqi security force that is seen as politically legitimate.

Every other road leads to more war and more death.

A year ago, when the Iraqi insurgency included radical Shiites killing Americans as well as the Sunni and Baathist forces still fighting, Kerry made his points about international support. Bush was too preoccupied with his advertising assault on Kerry to pay much attention.
