imagewise. He knew she was there. He should've put out his hand and smiled. There were two possible outcomes to that: She shakes his hand and smiles, and that's the big news today. The two candidates, after a very tough two weeks, shake hands in unity. OR... he puts out his hand and she snubs HIM! For real. He comes out smelling like a rose, and her campaign is over.

By turning away, he ensured there would be some brouhaha, regardless of his intentions. At the very least, he missed a great opportunity.

So even given that there was no snub at all, he made a mistake.
