Not wanting an oppressive militarist theocracy is not exactly synonymous
with shifting to the left.

What about Rep. Schwarz (R-MI) losing his re-election bid to an extreme
rightist in his primary in Michigan the same day Lieberman lost his bid
for his party's nomination? By their own definition, the Republicans have
just been taken over by the radical right, and have no room left for voices of
moderation within their own party.

(Well, OK, that happened long ago, but y'all get my drift)
