1776: U.S. Declaration of Independence signed.

1861: National income tax, the first of its kind, passed to aid the Union war effort.

1931: Albert Einstein urges all scientists to refuse military work.

1937: Forty thousand West Coast maritime workers call work stoppage to join anti-fascist demonstration.


1942: Press in Los Angeles whips up racism, sheriff arrests over 600 Mexican-Americans for one murder.

1964: U.S. destroyer Maddox reports, falsely, it had been attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.

1990: Iraq invades Kuwait, after discussing plans with U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie.
