What audio coming OUT of his camera? What kind of videocam even lets you adjust the recording volume at all? And what videography experience do you have, to be speaking for all videographers?

The same sounds going INTO the camera go into the cameraman's ears. If you want to hear what's right there around you, you don't need an earpiece. But you do if you're taking direction, or if your brother is staying in touch with you while he's filming elsewhere. Amitting that's what it was used for would prove the Separation Anxiety subplot is a lie, though.
