The above photograph is courtesy of The Churchill Society. The contrails of fighters overhead St.Paul's Cathedral in London during the height of the Battle of Britain added a reassuring sign that the pilots of Fighter Command were hard at work. The lattice of condensation trails marked the paths of RAF Spitfires and Luftwaffe Bf109s engaged in mortal combat during the long summer of 1940 at altitudes in excess of 30,000 feet.
