the way of life of the locals was threatened by the immigrants, especially their leaders who have a *good life*, power, prestige, easy living etc.....and in fact they were quite right, the immigrants did in fact change the local lives, their customs, their values.......

that change does not come easily........and there will be resistance

not having read the book...i saw/interpret the violence against the jews in the beginning as that culture clash....as well as the usual taking advantage of the new comers....
