City kangaroos collared for science

TARGET: ACT Parks, Conservation and Lands research assistant Claire Wimpenny uses a dart rifle to sedate kangaroos at the Wanniassa Hills reserve.
--------------

ACT Government ecologists are fitting global positioning collars to kangaroos across the region's urban areas to better understand their movements.

The study, believed to be the first in Australia of a large, wild animal in an urban environment, could help to plan kangaroo population-control programs.

In understanding where and when kangaroos move, the study could also reduce the number of kangaroos involved in motor-vehicle collisions.

Territory and Municipal Services senior ecologist Don Fletcher said the ACT recorded the highest densities of kangaroo populations in Australia, making it the ''kangaroo capital''.
