68. Got a true liberal arts education. Read voraciously.
Went to a liberal arts college. Got a natural science degree, a B.A., believe it or not. The college did not offer a B.S. That's how liberal arts they were.

Learned to think for myself--had to take a couple of religion courses at my Presbyterian liberal arts college, which opened up my mind tremendously.

Got a law degree, which teaches a very special type of analytical thinking.

Am a creative person, which is threatening to conservatives. They don't understand art and music and creativity.

I was raised by a union organizer dad who mellowed into a Kennedy democrat. His brother always voted Socialist. And a mom who had four years of college.

My maternal grandparents, both born in the 1890s, had master's degrees from Mississippi A&M. It's stunning to me that both of them, and especially a female, had master's degrees. They were Democrats.

In 1900, one percent of the population had a bachelor's degree.

My personal motto: Why be normal?

My personal philosophy: All institutions are designed to take your power away from you -- the church, the school, the family. Don't do something just because it's the way things are done.

Trying to impress people is fruitless. Worrying about what other people think is stupid. Most people are so self centered that they worry about what you think about THEM.

Most people never develop a distinct personality. That is sad.
