The other half of that always went to Lennon/McCartney, because Northern Songs was sold to ATV back in the 60's, and they have stock in ATV. Michael Jackson bought ATV out from under McCartney. He didn't, AFAIK, lose the rights during his financial struggle. So, if I've got the math right, he's giving him back the 50% of the 50% that Sony doesn't own.

EMI, OTOH, owns the recording rights and the actual recordings. In fact, they just worked out their differences and are re-issuing the entire remastered catalog in September.
