the only reason i might fly on a short trip is if i need the miles topped off, but the advantages of driving are so huge -- no waiting for security, you can leave when you're ready, you don't have to spend much time packing because you can just put everything in the trunk and have it along, tools and a big cooler of drinks can be carried, two people or more can go as cheaply as one, me and my pets can go as cheaply as one on an airplane, no need for a rental car plus insurance (my regular auto insurance doesn't cover rental car insurance)

driving is just better and cooler in every way, the only problem is that my car doesn't do so well on the transatlantic/transpacific portion of the journey :-)

a few years back i took a mileage run to a city where i can drive in 9.5 hours, since i live in nola, you can't get there from here and there is always a connection, but i found a flight where going to airport, going through security, getting one flight, connection time, getting next flight was a couple hours shorter -- plus i had use of a car for free at the other end -- so i tried it -- fine going out but it took me almost 20 hours to get home thanks to tornadoes at my connection and re-routes far to the north before i could find a plane back to nola

because things can so frequently go wrong when you're flying, a potential couple hours' savings IF everything goes right when you fly simply isn't enough even with a free car in the package
