Internet Connection Problems

I am having problems connecting to the internet. On Monday there was a lighting storm and after that I have not been able to connect to the internet. This is what is happening. When I connect the phone directly into the computer modem and then connect the line from the computer to the phone the phone does not get a dial tone. When I connect the phone line to the phone the phone has a dial tone. I just had the computer modem checked at Circuit City and the person there said the modem was working fine. I also did a computer check at my home and the modem seemed to be working. So can anyone tell me what is going on with my computer? I have done everything I could think of doing. What else can be done to get to the internet.
