In his grief, he looked for someone to blame, and I will bet you he has regretted it ever since.

It is a horrible tragedy, I am sorry you lost your friend. You were in no way to blame. I think you may be torturing yourself with what-ifs, hadn't gone to the party, hadn't gotten wasted, hadn't met Carl hadn't been born- just stop. It helps no one, and it hurts you.

Grieve for Carl, forgive his father, and love yourself.
