1. It's often a scam job.
A lot of companies make you an independent contractor so you're on your own except for the commission. Few people do well enough to support themselves, but you don't get paid unless you sell, so the company pumps through lots of people to get their volume.

The companies pay no benefits, little overhead, and you end up working your ass of 100 hours a week to keep your head above water.

There are some legitimate jobs selling insurance, but I wouldn't recommend it unless they provide at least a base salary and an office.
