Gena Davis' character is the Independant VP under a Republican Pres. He has made it clear that the only reason he chose her as VP is to get the female vote. The Pres gets a stroke, and on his death bed asks the VP to step down, and allow the Speaker of the House (another Rep) to take over instead. The Pres dies, and Gena decides not to step down.
