Though there are only 2 million fullbloods left of 60 million who were here when Chris landed. The smallpox infected blankets the priests gave us helped a lot to thin us out. Then there was the slave labor. And the massacres, like Powder River and Wounded Knee. And the killing of the buffalo down to 13 Western buffalo left; the extinction of the Eastern buffalo altogether. And the herding onto wastelands no one wanted. The withholding of low-quality reservation food rations, starvation into submission on the rez. Then the forced sterilizations of Indian women after their first child, with no consent (the most recent case of that was in 2000). The abject poverty. The geographic and social isolation.

Sigh. But we are still here.
