16. I'm not the first person to have the idea
that the basis of ethics is sympathy. One of the fundamental principles of Christianity, in fact, is that it is not enough just to care about the people who love you, and that you have to act out of love for everyone--even people you don't actually know. Sadly, this is one of the principles that the right-wing Christian movement seems to understand only in the most warped way imaginable.
