2. Hmmmmmmmm ....
1) .. The Sylvania MAY have a 'zoom' function, if you say it occurred when a button was pressed .... I know Zenith produced a few TV's that had a built iin 'Zoom' .... whatever for ? ....

IF it is not a built-in function: .... then it may be a defect of the video deflection circuit, output too high ....

2) .. He could run the cable to the VCR .... er ..... wait a second: . its a built in VCR ? ..... does it have independent, externally accessible patch points ? ... or is it integrated within the TV to automatically 'patch in' when required ? ....

Hmmmmmmm ? .... IF it acts like an outboard VCR: ... then he could rout the cable to the VCR, then from the VCR to the TV: ... use the VCR as the channel-tuning front end ....

IF instead the VCR is functionally integrated into the TV: .. then I have no idea what you could do: .. except buy an original replacement remote control ..... or a universal capable of providing decent functionality with THAT TV ....

Good luck ...
