79. For California, I would choose:

Best: I would probably pick Santa Cruz as the overall best. Everything southern California tries to be and fails. Cool, comfortable climate. Beautiful redwood forests. Also very liberal, great scenery, great university, great culture, not far from San Francisco, Yosemite and the Sierras, Monterey, Big Sur, etc. I don't know what the cost of living is though, that could be a deal killer.

Worst: Bombay Beach. Not on the coast - this is a dump that some people actually live at, on the eastern shore of the polluted Salton Sea in the lower desert of Imperial County. Extremely hot there half the year, smells bad, nothing to do whatsoever. Why is it even there, let alone have residents? Apparently 366 people actually call it home. Worst place I have ever seen. Only Gila Bend, Arizona can compete with it.
