... is the description that the debris field was over a square kilometer. You don't get that sort of wreckage spread from a light plane crashing into the water on a landing approach. At most, the wings shear off, and the wreckage settles to the bottom more or less uniformly. Even if the pilot were completely disoriented in the fog and went in tail first in a backwards stall, pretty much the same thing would happen. Maybe under the latter circumstance, the fuselage might break up in a couple of pieces.

A square kilometer is about ten football fields long and ten wide.
