'X' marks the spot on CNN

On Monday, CNN fueled the fire among conservatives who like to complain about the "liberal media" when a giant, black X appeared over Vice President Dick Cheney's face. CNN was carrying Cheney's speech live when the big X popped up on the screen a couple of times, each time for less than a 15th of a second. There's a lot of buzz among conspiracy theorists news watchers who are convinced that the X was intentional (ahem, Matt Drudge). CNN says it was a technical malfunction. Why an 'X'? It's used by news stations to set the black level for animations. It really does appear to be an unfortunate mistake that makes CNN looks stupid. I've been in news control rooms where the director is preparing an effect and accidentally punches it up on air. Haven't you ever seen something else appear behind the weather man, other than the satellite maps? However, the "15th of a second" glitch gave this morning's Fox and Friends something to talk about in a segment they called Technical or Tactical? Classy.
