and being the victim of it, is more likely to stand up for what is right than those on the side of the oppressors.

It's also a reason why every empire that has ruled with force ends up crumbling in disgrace. People ultimately tire of being oppressed and abuse and strike back. (or commit suicide) If there is a competing civilization, it stands to reason that those oppressed will help the invading forces. I hate to say it, but sometimes people need to take a chance with the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"... of course, the enemy of your enemy ultimately turns out to be your enemy in the end anyway; all for naught.

Things never seem to change.
