While presiding over the hearing, Sensenbrenner was surprisingly hostile towards his colleagues complaining, “The ACLU has testified four times before. I guess they didn’t get to say all they wanted to say, that’s why they are here for the fifth time.” The ACLU was not present at the hearing. In addition, Sensenbrenner twice refused to acknowledge Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX) and repeatedly cut off witness responses to Members’ questions in mid-sentence. Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) sarcastically interjected stating his appreciation for “your civility to the witnesses.” Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ) admonished AAI President James Zogby for suggesting American torture of detainees. “Don’t blame me,” Zogby responded. “I’m not the one who wrote the memos.”
