37. this is right up my alley
I was just reading the Sonia Johnson, From housewife to Heretic, out of Women Without Superstition...and remembering trying to get the Equal Rights Amendment ratified in '78...."I finally went to the leaders of the church in my area and said to them that the problem was not just that they were doing it, but they were doing it covertly, not telling any body who they were, going in massive numbers to the legislatures and lobbying. Nobody knew where these people were coming from; they thought they were ordinary citizens, just coming out of their own private consciences. Well, there's nothing private, consciously, about those folks at all. If the president of the Mormon church changed his mind about the Equal Rights Amendment to night, the whole Mormon church would be pro-ERA by morning."
