Can you refer us to a source where Thompson states he wanted to die by suicide?

What was his "dilemma", as you put it? Financial woes? Terminal disease? Impending divorce? Unbearable shame brought upon by scandal? What dliemma did he "solve"?

Also, how does his wife and son being present in the home automatically make this an open and shut case of suicide?

It's not unheard of for a son to kill his father or a wife to kill her husband. In fact, it's quite possible for a son and wife to conspire together to kill the father/husband.

The son and wife being home doesn't rule out that a fourth party may have entered the building, either covertly or with HST's permission.
