20. Bush & Ashcroft embraced by BJU
BJU is well-known for its racist, anti-Catholic philosophy but that didn't stop Bushbaby from making it his first campaign stop in the 2000 S. Carolina primary. So while Rove was busy sliming McCain through a sleazy phone-calling blast, Bush spoke before the BJU faculty and student body:

<snip>
Bush "said he would seek 'compassionate results.' His compassion is irrelevant when out of all the colleges in South Carolina, he chose the most racist and homophobic. --2/9/00

More about Bob Jones University, where George W. Bush gave his "I am a conservative" speech this week. In the '80's Bob Jones Jr. said that "all the Popes are demon-possessed" and "the greatest danger we face today" is Pope John Paul II. In fact, he said, "the papacy is the religion of antichrist and is a satanic system." As for its present-day interracial dating ban, "there is a held belief from way back in the institution that that was biblically wrong."

Asscroft, shortly after Bush appointed him Attorney General, also gave a speech to BJU's student body. It reads like a sermon from the pulpit. But, then, would we expect any less from the very Rev. Asscroft?

<snip>
Unique among the nations, America recognized the source of our character as being Godly and eternal, not being civic and temporal. And because we have understood that our source is eternal, America has been different. We have no king but Jesus.
