Reminds me of my sister pulling off to the side of the road to look under the hood. She knows nothing, absolutely nothing, about car engines except their location (actually I think I had to tell her that, too).

Pilots do not fix engines. They are not qualified to work on them. Aircraft mechanics fix engines. An aircraft would not be allowed to fly if a pilot had tinkered with it unless he was also an aircraft mechanic, which is rare.
