Keeping them off CNN won't do the job these days.

The pics will further tarnish the dignity and honor of the US
government. US citizens will have to travel on their own
merits, or not as they choose, but their dignity an honor is
not directly affected by the pics.

It's worth noting that despite the unpleasantness 65 years ago
Japanese and German travelers are welcomed all over the World
today. This is what happens when a government and it's citizens
