10. I'll forever remember two nights after 9-11, when he & Pat Robertson
... speaking on "Christian" television, told America's faithful who was really to blame for the attacks of September 11, 2001.

I was glued to CNN, which I had never watched before 9-11, and I caught the short quote on the crawl at the bottom of the screen. I couldn't believe my eyes, so I waited for it to loop back around so I could write it down. The next day a columnist in the Los Angeles Times gave the full statement, just so we could all see what loathsome cockroaches these two men are.

Falwell on the attacks of Sept. 11: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way-—all of them who have tried to secularize America—-I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen."

Falwell continues: "God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."

Robertson, replying: "Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can to do the major population."

Then and now I state: their god of hatred and malice is emphatically not my God. I asked then, when would the Christians of this nation rise up and denounce these two? And I am so grateful that at last, at long last, people like Rev. Jim Wallis are doing so.
