After I posted, I asked myself, why am I so skeptical about the electorate?

I think there is already very little middle ground on the war. Supporters are paranoia-driven (or patriotic if you accept their self-description). Fear and/or patriotism are "bottomless" and spawn the belief that the war is worth fighting at any price.

Opponents oppose the war as unnecessary and misguided. Additional economic hardship is only another argument supporting a view already firmly held.

I think there are very few people who think the war was a good idea but now it's getting too expensive.
