Obama's nomination of Sotomayor is chocked full of problems for the first person willing to take the first step
I see that Huckabee already has but he is inconsequential really
If they go too hard at her the Latino vote evaporates If they go too hard at her the surburban soccer mom vote evaporates (worse than it has) If they go too hard at her their entire "bootstraps" line disappears If they go too hard at her their "experience" and "law" over "empathy" argument makes them look like fools
If they DON'T go hard at her their base (what is left of it) will push them back into the minefield. They have been spoiling for this fight for a long time. The "pro-lifers" especially are going to expect a stand, no actually some movement-forward movement... no going back. They will have to find a way to go forward, they have to. They will probably use an untouchable Senator or anyone willing to prove their devotion to the cause even if it costs them a leg.

They first two lines in any war movie in which the platoon suddenly finds themself in a minefield are:
"Oh @*#$ we are in a minefield!" the second one is "NO ONE MOVE"
the problem is that this isn't a movie. The US Army trains to and by the principle that any minefield does not exist on its own. It is always watched over-sometimes for reporting sometimes for attack. The last place you ever want to suddenly find yourself is in a minefield.

The really odd part about this is that their noise machine had mounted a massive effort against Napolitano just before the swineflu scare happened. They must have been SURE that Obama was going to nominate her. They pulled out of their entrenched positions on that front and went swinging around for others.........and found themselves in a minefield
