News International as a corporation could face a criminal prosecution following its admission that the phones of celebrities were hacked into by its staff.

Under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (Ripa), a corporate body can be charged with the unlawful interception of voicemail messages if it is found to have "connived" or "consented" with the commission of the offence, or if it is proved that the hacking was attributable to "any neglect on the part of a director, manager, secretary or other similar officer of the body corporate" or "any person who was purporting to act in any such capacity
