Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has opted for a more modest version of the Great Seal of the Commonwealth by handing out new lapel pins that cover up the exposed left breast of the Roman Goddess Virtus, the Virginian-Pilot reports.

The newspaper's Julian Walker quotes Cuccinelli's spokesman, Brian Gottstein, as saying the pin was paid for by Cuccinelli's political action committee, not with taxpayer funds.

Gottstein acknowledges that the attorney general has noted Virtus' "more modest attire," and says the new version "harkens back to an older version of the seal."

The newspaper quotes the state capitol historian as saying there have been numerous versions over the years, the most recent dating to new language in the state code in 1930 that said Virtus is "dressed as an Amazon."
