50. If you don't think that there's "Deep South" in NC
you need to spend a little more time here. I've had folks try to tell me that all kinds of places are southern, from Missouri to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Not southern. North Carolina is intensely southern, and part of the deep south, for better or worse.

We have had a long tradition of responsible state government, and have avoided many of the bad things that have gone along with much of the south's decision to embrace ignorance, class and racial divisions, freaky religion and the Republican Party. But when you stop in one of our towns to enjoy the scent of our magnolias, to eat some North Carolina-Style Barbecue, to visit one of our historic plantations, or to see the very birthplace of NASCAR, you will find that this is the Deep South. I live about ten miles away from the very spot where BC Powder was first formulated. If that does not qualify as the deep south, then I don't know what does.
