Treatment in Canada Irks Polish President

WARSAW, Poland - Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski said he was treated like a "potential illegal immigrant" after his plane was diverted to Canada while traveling home from Washington.

The president and his entourage were held for about three hours before being allowed to leave the airport in St. John's, Newfoundland, Kwasniewski's spokesman said Thursday.

The president's specially marked government plane originally had been scheduled to land in Gander, Newfoundland, but was rerouted, catching immigration officials in St. John's off-guard.

"We saw what it means when an unexpected visitor arrives and is treated from the start as a potential illegal immigrant. And that is how we were treated," Kwasniewski told reporters after arriving in Warsaw on Wednesday.
