They went to look at a rock because that was the whole point of sending the rover in the first place: to examine rocks on the surface of Mars.
Just because you don't understand/agree with the choices they've made doesn't mean that there is some vast conspiracy involving dozens of scientists at the JPL to avoid embarrassing some fundies. That theory makes no sense whatsoever.
