63. put words in someone else's mouth
A statement was made that the Capitol Hill police "are stupid as a bag of rocks" -- a statement that I took as relating not just to the McKinney incident, but to the quality of the CHP generally. I noted that my experience with the CHP was that they were professional and helpful.

I don't know exactly what happened with McKinney and frankly, absent a tape, I doubt any of us will ever know exactly what happened. All I know is that I've entered the Capitol and other Senate and House office buildings hundreds of times and have never seen anyone challenge or ignore the CHP. Should the officer have recognized McKinney? Yes. But if he didn't, then I think that McKinney should have stopped when the officer asked her to, fished her id card out of her purse, and proceeded about her business.

Obviously she didn't do that. The issue then becomes exactly what happened when he "grabbed" her and when she "slapped" or "punched" or "pushed" him back. Without knowing exactly what happened I can't judge whether the CHP overreacted, she overreacted, or they both overreacted.
