2. No plans for Iraq attack, Bush says

US PRESIDENT George Bush yesterday described Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and his destructive weapons as a threat to all civilisation and appealed to sceptical German leaders and lawmakers for help in waging a wider war on terrorism. However, Mr Bush said he has no plans to attack Iraq.

Many European leaders have expressed reservations — at best — about a wider war on terror, especially if it means attacking Iraq. As many as 20,000 street protesters demonstrated against Mr Bush’s policies as he arrived in Berlin Wednesday evening.

For his part, Mr Schroeder side-stepped a question over whether he would back a US-led assault on Baghdad to topple Saddam, despite expressing reservations in the past about such a plan.

"There are no concrete military plans for attacks on Iraq, so no reason for me to speculate," said Mr Schroeder, with Mr Bush at his side.
