56. How very Biblical of him
Check it out: Rachel and Leah were sisters, Jacob married both of them.

Mormons use the Old Testament as their justification for polygamous marriage -- but since US law only recognizes one, they agreed to give it up when Utah became a state. Their leaders had a conclave and came up with a revelation from God telling them it was okay. (Sorry, I can't remember what they call it when God tells them something new.)

However, not all Mormons agreed, as we know.

I don't have a problem with what adults choose to do with other adults, and while in my own mind I define US marriage as "the union of two adult humans," I don't really care if a bunch of adults wants to form a polyamorous commune. God knows it's been done before.

But there are too many fringe-nuts out there who use the Bible to justify forcing underage girls into unions with much older men, and I have no patience with that.

Bottom line with this jurist: he swore to uphold the law of the land, which says a person gets to marry only one other person at a time. Serial monogamy is legally okay; polygamy is not.
