We have a very elderly friend (and veteran of hurricanes) who lives by herself in Fort Myers. When one of the hurricanes blew through there last year, she could not get out because there was no one to evacuate her. The day before it hit we tried calling EVERYPLACE to see if anyone could get her out. We were sure that she would be killed. But, she rode it out, with minimal damage to her property. She also said that she would NEVER go through another storm in her home alone again.

I think we'll be placing some long-distance calls here over the next 24 hours, and maybe paying for a plane ticket so that she can get the hell out for awhile.

Some people do choose to stay; others, unfortunately, cannot get a way out, or they opt for that too late. In any event, all of Florida should be in our thoughts.
