3. Breaking (Reuters): At least 50 killed in car bombs north of Baghdad
class="excerpt"]Thu Sep 29, 2005 1:09 PM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - More than 50 people were killed in a series of three apparently coordinated car bomb attacks in the mixed Shi'ite and Sunni Arab town of Balad, north of Baghdad, on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

They said bombs went off after dark near a busy market in a predominantly Shi'ite area, in a street with a bank and next to a police station in the town about 90 km (55 miles) north of Baghdad, killing at least 50 and wounding around 100.
