Goldman Sachs on Tuesday said third-quarter earnings surged 84 per cent from a year earlier as its investment bankers delivered their highest revenue in four years and its traders seized opportunities in the equity, credit and currency markets.

The Wall Street bank also announced a $7.1bn stock buy back that Thomson Financial said would rank as the largest ever in the investment banking sector.
