COP15 mass arrests deemed illegal

Copenhagen Municipal Court has ruled that the mass arrest of some 900 people during last year’s COP15 Climate Summit was illegal and has awarded damages of between DKK 5,000 and DKK 9,000 to those who have complained.

The judgment was immediately appealed by the Junior Counsel to the Treasury.

More than 200 people brought the case to court under a class action suit, complaining at the police use of preventive arrest, under which 900 people were restrained with strips and forced to sit in lines on a road.
