"Epic" discontent with the federal government is likely to sway midterm elections in November, according to a Pew Research Center poll released this week.

According to the survey, voters' satisfaction began to plunge in the fall of 2008 amid the financial crisis, which Pew says created the "perfect storm of conditions associated with distrust of government -- a dismal economy, an unhappy public, bitter partisan-based backlash, and epic discontent with Congress and elected officials."

While White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel told PBS' Charlie Rose on Monday there are "legitimate" reasons for Americans' anger, President Obama joked with his supporters about the Tea Party movement.
